When you think of San Diego, your mind might drift to images of the sun-soaked coastline, surfers trying to catch that perfect wave, a couple of crispy tacos and a local craft beer.

But did you know this laid-back beach city is also home to a rich marine industry?

San Diego's commercial relationship with kelp began over a century ago with the establishment of the first harvesting and processing operations of Macrocystis Pyrifera (giant kelp) forests off the coast in the early 20th century.

HISTORY OF KELP

Industrious locals recognized the potential of kelp, with its uses ranging from food stabilizers (algins, carrageenan, and agars) to fertilizers, glass, soaps and even to make explosives with kelp-derived potash during WWI.

Fast forward to 2024 and the kelp industry has come full circle. As we start to better understand the skincare benefits and environmental sustainability of kelp, San Diego's harvesting and processing industry is experiencing a resurgence. This echo of the past represents the region's deep-seated respect for its coastal heritage, its commitment to sustainability, and its innovative spirit.

And speaking of heritage, nowhere is San Diego's beach culture more apparent than on the oceanfront street called Neptune Ave. Nestled in Encinitas, Neptune Ave. is the quintessential reflection of the laid-back yet sophisticated aesthetic that characterizes San Diego. Our brand pays tribute to the area's deep-seated connection to the ocean, a bond that extends beyond the pristine beaches and surf spots, seeping into the heart of its community and industry. Neptune Ave. is a symbol of San Diego's love for its coastal roots and its readiness to ride the wave into a future where the ocean continues to play a central role.

Born in Encinitas, CA

Named after Neptune Ave., the iconic beach-front Encinitas street, our brand encapsulates the symbiotic relationship between the ocean’s bounty and the innovative spirit of San Diego. We harness the power of our local kelp (macroalgae), a nutrient-rich brown seaweed called Macrocystis Pyrifera, teeming with skin-loving compounds such as vitamins A, K, E, C, and B-12, antioxidants, and the unique polysaccharides laminarin and fucoidan.

Sustainability

MARINE BIODIVERSITY

Our main hero ingredient, along with our other powerful macroalgae extracts, is as efficient in its skin benefits—hydration, anti-aging, anti-oxidant, soothing—as it is sustainable. Thriving without freshwater or fertilizer, kelp absorbs carbon dioxide, supports marine biodiversity, and regenerates at an incredible rate. From the earliest days of San Diego's kelp industry to today's skincare renaissance, our brand reflects the region's rich coastal heritage, commitment to sustainability, and enduring innovation.

Neptune Ave. extends beyond just skincare; it's about dedicating our resources to understand and cultivate a more sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship with our ocean.
